Generation Pet has been operating for 28 years and has built something genuinely rare: a wholesale distributor trusted by independent retailers across six states, carrying 121+ natural-nutrition brands, with a dedicated regional sales team and a clear founding philosophy. That story exists. It is simply invisible on genpet.org.

The current site is functional as an order management tool for existing accounts. It is not working as a brand asset, a prospect-facing introduction, or a content marketing platform. The blog has never been used. The Resources section was promised and never built. Two pages that serve no purpose are still live. The site has no social media presence whatsoever.

The good news: the raw material is excellent. The fix is about surface area, not substance. PIR's recommendation is to build a brand site that gives Generation Pet's story the platform it deserves, clean up the retailer portal, and build the content infrastructure that turns genpet.org into an active growth channel.

Critical Issues
C-01
No social media presence
No Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or any other channel was found linked or referenced on genpet.org. A company with 121+ premium natural brands and 28 years of credibility has no owned social channel where that story can live, brands can be spotlighted, or retailers can engage.
Impact: Zero top-of-funnel reach. No mechanism to showcase the brand catalog to prospective retailers. Competitors with social presence have a permanent awareness advantage.
Critical
C-02
Blog is a BigCommerce placeholder: no real content ever published
The /blog/ page shows a single default BigCommerce demo post. No content has been published. For a company built on the belief that nutrition is the foundation of animal health, a blog is the easiest content channel to own: brand spotlights, nutrition education, retailer success stories, feeding guides.
Impact: No SEO value generated. No content to share or distribute. No content marketing funnel for prospect retailers.
Critical
C-03
Resources page is "Coming Soon": never launched
The /resources/ page shows a Coming Soon placeholder. Presumably scoped to house retailer support materials (sell sheets, training resources, planogram templates), it was never built. Retailers have no self-serve resource hub and must go through reps for every piece of collateral.
Impact: Missed opportunity to provide retailer value that reduces rep workload and improves sell-through for independent stores.
Critical
C-04
Two empty, off-brand pages still live
/self-service-dog-wash/ and /winter-coats/ are publicly accessible pages with no content and no relevance to Generation Pet's business as a wholesale natural nutrition distributor. They likely represent abandoned experiments that were never cleaned up.
Impact: Confuses first-time visitors. Signals that the site is not actively maintained. Dilutes brand identity.
Critical
C-05
Price Changes page returns 401 before login
Navigating directly to /price-adjustments/ without an active session returns a 401 HTTP error rather than redirecting to the login page. Other auth-protected pages redirect cleanly. Any retailer with a direct bookmark or saved link hits a dead end.
Impact: Friction for retailers accessing price data. Signals inconsistent access control implementation.

Opportunities
O-01
No visual territory map
The Territory page lists states in text and names the five reps with their sub-territories. No visual map exists. An illustrated map showing coverage zones with rep contact cards would immediately communicate reach, reduce routing questions, and serve as a compelling prospect-facing asset.
Opportunity: Turn a static text page into a differentiated, shareable brand asset.
Opportunity
O-02
No team bios beyond Doug John
The five regional reps are listed on Territory with contact info but have no photos, bios, or personality. Independent retailers buy from people, not from companies. Humanizing the rep team is a meaningful trust-builder that broadline distributors rarely do.
Opportunity: Build retailer trust. Differentiate on the human side of the business.
Opportunity
O-03
No retailer testimonials or success stories
No customer testimonials, retailer spotlights, or case studies exist anywhere on the site. A 28-year company with strong retailer relationships almost certainly has enthusiastic customers who would provide a quote. Peer validation is the highest-conversion trust signal in B2B and this channel is completely untapped.
Opportunity: Easily collected through normal rep account visits. High conversion impact with low production cost.
Opportunity
O-04
Logo has no standalone icon variant
The current logo is a text wordmark only. No icon, monogram, or logomark was found. At small sizes (favicon, social avatar, app icon) wordmarks lose legibility. A companion icon would enable consistent representation across all digital touchpoints where a full wordmark cannot render cleanly.
Opportunity: Complete the brand identity system for consistent multi-channel use.
Opportunity
O-05
Brand catalog is a plain list, not a browsable asset
Brands We Carry lists 121+ brands with no search, filtering, or category organization. Discovery is entirely scroll-based. For prospect retailers evaluating whether Generation Pet carries the brands their customers want, this is friction. The catalog breadth is a competitive strength that should be easy to explore.
Opportunity: Filterable brand catalog becomes a prospect conversion tool. 121 brands is a talking point that should be interactive.
Opportunity
O-06
SEO is basic only: no content-driven strategy
The site uses standard BigCommerce SEO defaults (page titles, meta descriptions, breadcrumb schema) with no targeted keyword content, local SEO, or structured data beyond BigCommerce outputs. Blog content is the highest-value SEO investment and currently produces nothing.
Opportunity: Content-driven SEO could generate inbound retailer leads at near-zero marginal cost. No inbound content funnel currently exists.

What's Working
Core Strengths
S-01
28-year founding story with authentic origin
Generation Pet was founded in 1998 by Doug John after observing chronic health issues in his own animals that he attributed to poor nutrition. He started the company to find and distribute products that actually work. That is a compelling, differentiated founder narrative that very few wholesale distributors can match.
Strength: Authentic origin that resonates with values-driven independent retailers. Currently buried and underused on the site.
Strength
S-02
Exclusive independent retailer channel
Generation Pet does not supply mass-market chains. They supply only independent retailers. This is a deliberate positioning decision that aligns directly with the values and business interests of the independent pet retail community and creates a built-in trust signal with that audience.
Strength: Clear channel discipline that should be a primary headline in prospect messaging.
Strength
S-03
121+ natural-nutrition brands across 34 categories
The catalog spans frozen raw, freeze-dried, kibble, supplements, grooming, dental, toys, litter, and more. Breadth from a single natural-focused distributor is a meaningful competitive advantage for retailers wanting to consolidate their buying relationships.
Strength: One-stop source for independent natural pet retailers. Needs better presentation to land as a selling point.
Strength
S-04
Dual-warehouse logistics with Northeast territory coverage
Two warehouses (Savage, MD and Bloomfield, CT, opened Spring 2019) provide logistics coverage across the Maine-to-Virginia territory. Real infrastructure that reduces delivery times and expands reach at both ends of the territory. Currently mentioned only once on the site.
Strength: Operational capability prospects care about. Needs to be a headline feature, not a footnote.
Strength
S-05
Dedicated regional sales team with named territory owners
Five sales reps each own a defined sub-territory with personal email and direct phone. Independent retailers can build an ongoing relationship with a single contact who knows their specific market. This is not a call-center model.
Strength: High-touch sales model is a strong differentiator vs. broadline distributors. The team needs faces, bios, and personality on the site.

Color Palette
Green-led natural palette, appropriate and differentiated
Primary forest green anchors the brand with a clean, health-focused signal. Harvest amber provides warmth and a secondary accent. The palette reads as natural and trustworthy without veering into mass-market pet-store territory. Appropriate for the category. No major concerns.

Typography
Montserrat: single typeface, clean but limited hierarchy
Montserrat is a clean geometric sans-serif that reads well at scale. The current implementation uses a single typeface for all contexts: headings, body, nav, and UI elements. A second typeface pairing would add hierarchy and visual richness. A warmer serif for editorial content or a utility mono for product data would both elevate the system. No urgent concern but room for growth in Phase 2.
Logo
Wordmark only: no icon variant exists
The logo is a text wordmark. No standalone icon, leaf mark, or monogram was found anywhere on the site or CDN assets. This creates a real gap at small sizes: favicon, social avatar, mobile app icon, co-branded materials. For a company with 28 years of brand equity, an icon variant is standard identity infrastructure. Recommend commissioning a companion mark alongside the redesign.
Imagery & Voice
Natural lifestyle photography, earnest professional tone
Hero imagery uses warm, natural pet-owner lifestyle photography. The brand voice is earnest, professional, and knowledge-led rather than salesy. This is exactly right for the independent retailer audience, which is similarly values-driven and skeptical of marketing fluff. The tone is an asset. Consistency of imagery on inner pages needs attention: most rely on brand logo grids with no lifestyle photography.
Action Plan
Prioritized Recommendations
Priority Recommendation Addresses Effort
P1 Build a brand site separate from the retailer portal. New home (founding story, distributor differentiation, catalog CTA), About (team + bios), Territory (visual map + rep cards), Contact. C-01, O-01, O-02, O-05 High
P1 Retire /self-service-dog-wash/ and /winter-coats/ immediately. 301 redirect to home and /brands/ respectively. C-04 Low
P1 Fix /price-adjustments/ 401: redirect to login page on unauthenticated access instead of returning an HTTP error. C-05 Low
P2 Launch LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram. Start with 2 posts per week: brand spotlight + nutrition tip. Use the 121-brand catalog as content source for the first 6 months. C-01, O-06 Medium
P2 Publish 4 blog seed articles: the founding story, top 5 freeze-dried brands, how to set up a natural nutrition section, and a retailer success story. Establish a monthly cadence from there. C-02, O-06 Medium
P2 Build the Resources section with 5-10 documents: sell sheets, brand one-pagers, planogram templates, retailer ordering guide. Assign to rep team to gather existing materials first. C-03 Medium
P3 Collect 3-5 retailer testimonials through normal rep account check-ins. Add to homepage and About page. One quote per rep territory ensures geographic diversity. O-03 Low
P3 Rebuild brand catalog page with category filtering, logo grid, and search. Standardize each brand detail page format (origin, category, why we carry it). O-05 High
P3 Commission a logo icon variant or companion mark for social avatars, favicon, and co-branded applications. Should pair cleanly with the existing wordmark. O-04 Medium
